On Monday, Lebanon’s Parliament named Nawaf Salam as the country’s prime minister. After Salam’s endorsement, newly elected President Joseph Aoun asked him to form a government. Salam previously was Lebanon’s ambassador to the U.N. and currently serves as the head of the International Court of Justice. This election is seen as a major political blow to Hezbollah, who has acted as the real power in Lebanon for decades. Salam’s election defeated a Hezbollah-backed candidate, showing that Hezbollah has lost some influence on Lebanon’s state.
