Moldova detains 74 people over an alleged Russia-backed unrest plot around key election

Police uncover training camps ahead of Sunday’s vote.

Moldovan police conducted 250 raids across the country and detained 74 people as part of an investigation into a suspected Russia-backed plan to incite mass riots around Sunday’s parliamentary election. Prosecutors say most suspects traveled to Serbia for training, with some believing they were on religious pilgrimages before learning their real purpose was to create disorder and destabilization. President Maia Sandu accused the Kremlin of spending hundreds of millions of euros to influence the election, which many view as a choice between EU membership and closer Russian ties. The arrests come as Moldova pursues EU accession following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, further straining relations with Moscow.
