Moldova’s pro-Western president wins second term in runoff overshadowed by Russian meddling claims

Moldova’s President has been reelected in an election marred by claims of interference.

Moldova’s incumbent President, Maia Sandu, has been reelected with 55% of the vote. President Sandu has been vocally pro-Western and has pushed for Moldova to align more closely with the EU. Moldovan authorities have claimed that foreign actors such as Russia attempted to interfere in the election. The election comes after a referendum on whether Moldova should pursue EU membership which passed with 50.35% of the vote.
