Naval Drone Attack Strikes Container Ship off Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast, Heightening NATO Eastern Flank Tensions

Three surface naval drones struck a container ship sailing in the Black Sea, approximately 21 nautical miles off the Bulgarian coast near Cape Kaliakra, causing severe starboard-side damage and an on-board fire. The targeted commercial ship enroute from the Israeli port of Haifa to Constanța, Romania suffered heavy structural damage, prompting the emergency evacuation of its 18-member crew. The strike occurred even as a high-level meeting in Sofia between the defense ministers of Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye was taking place on maritime security in Black Sea. In response to the growing frequency of Black Sea attacks on commercial shipping, the three NATO allies agreed to establish a trilateral coordination mechanism, enhance intelligence sharing, and improve early-warning capabilities.
