Lawmakers impeached Vice President Sara Duterte of the Philippines on Wednesday, escalating political tensions in the country. Duterte faced four complaints over alleged misuse of millions in public funds. Additionally, she had pronounced plans to assassinate President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., his wife, and his cousin who is speaker of the House of Representatives. She has denied accusations of corruption, instead casting the impeachment as being politically motivated. This view is shared by many Filipinos. This impeachment risks escalating tensions between supporters of Duterte and Marcos.
