Protesters rally for and against Ecuador’s president as emergency takes effect in 10 provinces

State of emergency limits assembly in areas with concentrated protests.

The government declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces with large Indigenous populations after two weeks of demonstrations against fuel subsidy cuts that raised diesel prices by a dollar per gallon. Police used tear gas Sunday to disperse protesters who attempted to breach security cordons, while pro-government supporters rallied in larger numbers at the same park. One civilian died in violent clashes last week, and prosecutors have charged 13 detainees with terrorism.
