Russian diplomats have arrived in Syria for the first time since Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad was toppled by opposition fighters. Al-Assad was a close ally of Moscow and sought refuge in Russia late last year. It is expected that the Russian delegation will meet with Syria’s current leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, and the foreign minister. Moscow hopes to secure its two military bases in Syria with the visit. The bases are Russia’s only military outposts outside of the former Soviet Union.
