Russian Military and Commercial Activity Appears Halted at Key Syrian Port 

Satellite imagery from the past two weeks indicates that Russian military and commercial activity appears to be halted at the key Syrian port of Tartus. No cargo ships have entered or left the port since Monday. The port has been essential in Russia’s projection of military power in the region. Activity at the Tartus port has ceased since Sunday, when Bashar al-Assad’s government fell. The port was established in 1971, and Russia has maintained a presence there ever since. It is Russia’s only deepwater port in the Mediterranean.
