Rwanda has severed diplomatic ties with Belgium, its former colonial ruler, following conflict between the countries over Rwanda’s invasion of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The escalation came as the European Union imposed sanctions against Rwandan military and government officials for their role in the ongoing conflict. The EU has accused Rwanda of fueling the conflict by positioning troops in eastern Congo, additionally taking Congo’s mineral resources.
