Flooding in southwest China has led to the deaths of six people, and weather officials warn more heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days. Townships and infrastructure in Rongjiang County, Guizhou province, suffered “significant damage,” the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday, adding that water in the county seat had receded below warning levels. Workers were focusing on dredging, cleanup efforts and searching for anyone who’d been trapped as waters rose rapidly, Xinhua said. It said the death toll was as of 11 a.m., suggesting the figure may rise. Rongjiang, with a population just shy of 300,000, is some 780 km (485 miles) northwest of Hong Kong. China’s southwest has been soaked by above-average rains over the past 10 days and the China Meteorological Administration says parts of Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan could get up to 300 millimeters more through July 5. China often deals with heavy downpours and flooding in the summer that lead to loss of life and crop damage, a problem exacerbated by climate change. Dozens of people were killed in 2023 when Beijing and other parts of northern China were hit by heavy rain.
