Slovenians reject in a referendum a law on assisted dying for terminally ill patients

Referendum halts Slovenia’s assisted dying law.

Preliminary results showed 53% of Slovenians voted against legalizing assisted dying, suspending the law passed in July. Turnout reached nearly 41%, with opponents led by conservative activist Ales Primc framing the measure as a threat to social reform. Supporters argued the law offered dignity and choice for terminally ill patients, requiring approval from two doctors before self-administered medication. While disappointed, advocates believe future legislation will return, as other EU nations, including Austria, have already adopted similar laws.
