Somalia, Ethiopia agree on compromise to end tension, Turkish leader says 

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Somalia and Ethiopia have agreed on a joint declaration, resolving the countries’ dispute over the Somaliland region. The compromise will additionally address Ethiopia’s push for sea access as a landlocked country. As the most populous landlocked country in the world, Erdogan hopes that the deal will eventually ensure that Ethiopia gains sea access. After Ethiopia struck a deal with Somaliland in January to lease part of its coastline for an Ethiopian port and military base in exchange for diplomatic recognition, tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia rose. This new agreement hopes to resolve these tensions and encourage the two countries to work together on commercial arrangements.
