Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara spoke with the New York Times this month, speaking about his desire for foreign support. Al-Shara hopes to persuade Western officials to lift sanctions on his country and provide military assistance to build a new army and prevent another Syrian civil war. He additionally is in need of foreign financing to pay his public workers. Foreign support is critical for Syria’s survival, something that he states affects the entire Middle East. Al-Shara discussed potential deals with Turkey and Russia, alluding to potential military support as well.
