On Wednesday, the U.S. was the sole country to vote against a United Nations Security Council cease-fire resolution in the Gaza Strip. The resolution was calling for an immediate and unconditional cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. The 14 other Council members voted in favor of the proposal. The U.S. stated that it vetoed the resolution as it was not contingent on the release of hostages currently held in Gaza. While the proposal called for hostage release, the wording suggested that the cease-fire would come before hostage release. This is the fourth time the U.S. has blocked the Council’s attempt to demand a cease-fire over the past year.
