This week, the U.S. lifted multimillion-dollar bounties which had been out for three senior Taliban officials. The move represents a significant shift by the current administration towards the militants, who were part of deadly attacks during the U.S. war in Afghanistan but have now refashioned themselves as more moderate within the Taliban. The move was seen as a major victory for the Taliban government by many Taliban officials. The three individuals were leaders of the Haqqani network, which is the only wing of the Taliban that the U.S. classifies as a foreign terrorist organization.
