UN suspends operations in Yemen’s Houthi stronghold after staff detained

The United Nations has suspended all operations in the Saada region of Yemen after more of its staff was detained by Houthi authorities. UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that the measures are necessary to guarantee the safety and security of UN personnel. Seven UN agencies currently operate in the region, and it is unknown how many people in Yemen will be impacted by the pause. Haq said that the pause will allow the UN to arrange the release of the detained individuals and ensure personnel safety when delivering critical humanitarian support. The Houthis have detained dozens of UN staff since 2021. At least 24 people were being held in detention before the most recent arrests.
