Climbers rescued as Semeru eruption forces evacuations.

Indonesian authorities evacuated more than 170 climbers stranded by Mount Semeru’s sudden eruption, guiding them safely down from Ranu Kumbolo. The volcano sent clouds of ash, lava, and gas up to 13 kilometers down its slopes, prompting officials to raise the alert to the highest level. Nearly 1,000 residents from nearby villages were moved to shelters, though no casualties have been reported. Semeru, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, last erupted in 2021, killing 51 people and displacing thousands.
