Suspect Charged With Plotting to Fight U.S. in Afghanistan

An American citizen detained for more than a month as a material witness in a terrorism case in Oregon was charged today with plotting to fight against American soldiers in Afghanistan. The American, Maher Hawash, a 38-year-old software designer in Portland, was accused of conspiring with a group of six others who had already been charged with trying to provide material support to Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The authorities said Mr. Hawash and five of the other people flew to China shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, intending to go to Afghanistan. The officials said he stayed at the same hotels as the others and even shared a room with some of them. But after their money ran low, Mr. Hawash and most of the others returned to the United States without reaching Afghanistan, officials said. Full Story
