Australian with al-Qaeda Links Arrested in Cairo

Another Australian has been arrested over links to al-Qaeda amid revelations that the terror group had been looking for local targets before the September 11 attacks in the US. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the man was detained by Egyptian authorities in Cairo on May 26 because he overstayed his visa. But he was now being questioned over links to al-Qaeda, who he allegedly trained with in Afghanistan in mid-2001. “The Australian embassy in Cairo is seeking consular access to the man at the earliest opportunity,” Mr Downer said in a statement with Attorney-General Daryl Williams. Mr Downer said the unidentified man, the fifth Australian to be arrested over al-Qaeda links, was believed to have been in Egypt since his last departure from Australia in October 2002. Full Story
