The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, which was bombed in 1998, was shut down today after the United States received a “serious terrorist threat,” officials said. The new, heavily fortified embassy was closed because of a “continuing, very real terrorist threat in East Africa,” embassy spokesman Tom Hart said. It was not clear when operations would resume. A Defense Intelligence Agency official confirmed that the agency had issued a classified report today to senior U.S. government authorities warning of plans by “al Qaeda network operatives” to attack a U.S. government target in Kenya.
