Israelis Rescue Kidnapped Taxi Driver

Israeli special forces stormed a house in the West Bank at midnight and rescued a taxi driver kidnapped four days earlier, bringing an end to an affair that threatened a tenuous cease-fire and imperiled U.S.-backed peace moves. The rescue of 61-year-old Eliyahu Goral provided a bright spot amid a deadlock over how to deal with Palestinian militants. Israel’s foreign minister warned that the Palestinians are running out of time to disarm militants, saying an informal deadline for doing so runs out this weekend. Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas has refused to dismantle militant groups, fearing civil war, even as he insists the Palestinians will stick to the cease-fire.
