Security forces surrounded a village near the capital on Thursday as they launched a massive hunt for an ethnic Albanian suspected of briefly abducting two Macedonian policemen. The move triggered fears of renewed ethnic clashes between majority Macedonian Slavs and minority Albanians in the tiny Balkan state. Police freed two fellow officers late Wednesday hours after they were abducted by a group led by Avdil Jakupi in an attempt to exchange the officers for a detained bombing suspect. Jakupi fled during the rescue operation. He and his followers are believed to belong to the self-styled Albanian National Army advocating independence of Albanians living in Macedonia, said police spokeswoman Mirjana Konteska. “We have located Jakupi, and he will be arrested,” Konteska said. She refused to reveal details of the ongoing police operation. Prime Minister Branko Crvenkovski confirmed the police action, saying the authorities “will have zero tolerance” for the perpetrators of such crimes and will react against them “with fierce force.” Full Story
