A California biotechnology company said on Friday it was moving ahead with making a smallpox drug after getting a license from Gilead Sciences, Inc., which makes a similar drug. San Diego-based Chimerix said the agreement would allow it to sell its experimental drug CMX-001 to governments anywhere in the world. There is no treatment now for smallpox, which was eradicated but which the U.S. government says may someday be used in a biological weapon. The current smallpox vaccine can be used to prevent infection and even after a person has been exposed, but experts say it would be useful to have a drug on hand to treat anyone who may become infected anyway.
