Bush to Meet Moderate Muslim Leaders

President Bush will meet next week with moderate Muslim leaders in Bali, Indonesia, as part of a week-long swing through Southeast Asia aimed at rewarding and shoring up alliances in a region laced with al Qaeda operatives and Muslim extremists. The risky stop on the island of Bali, where the bombings of a nightclub killed 202 people last year, is designed to symbolize Bush’s determination to keep pursuing terrorists using financial systems, intelligence alliances and, when necessary, military strikes. Because of fears of a terrorist attack, the White House is confining Bush’s stop in Bali to three hours and is allowing only eight hours for a state visit to the Philippines. While in Manila, Bush will become the first U.S. president since Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1960 to address a joint session of the Philippine Congress. Full Story
