Police Report Reduction in Car Snatching

The Nigeria Police has reported a considerable reduction in incidents of car snatching in the country since the smashing of the notorious trans-border robbery gang led by Hamani Tidjani. The Inspector General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun, who disclosed this weekend, said this was a welcome development and a landmark achievement by the Nigeria Police force, assuring that the achievement would be sustained. He said, “since the smashing of Hamani tidjani and his cohorts by the Nigeria Police, there have not been reported incidents of cars snatched in Nigeria and taken across our borders.” Following an upsurge of car snatching (jeeps in particular) in July 2003, Balogun, after a careful appraisal of the situation, dispatched under-cover operatives to Benin Republic, where available intelligence showed that vehicles stolen from Nigeria were taken to and sold. “Police findings revealed that Hamani Tidjani and his criminal gang were the sponsors and receivers of the snatched vehicles,” Olakpe said.
