When Brent Hannon got back from Indonesia last September, he had quite a tale to tell his friends. To begin with, there was the trek across bucolic Lombok Island and the pitching of tents in the shadow of mystical Mount Rinjani. Hannon, a 41-year old freelance journalist, shared dinner with fellow travelers and then drifted off to sleep?only to be awakened by ugly threats, fearful cries and the rip of machetes through the nylon of his tent. By flashlight, a group of local villagers confiscated the foreigners' backpacks and stripped naked a German woman in a fevered search for valuables. “The worst part was when one guy raised his machete and asked for dollars,” says Hannon, who got a brutal kick to the stomach for defying the thieves. “Our guide was trembling.” Full Story
