Police on the Italian island of Sardinia on Tuesday arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of having sent a parcel packed with explosives to the home of Romano Prodi, the European Commission president. The arrest was the first apparent breakthrough in an investigation into a campaign of intimidation launched by suspected Italian anarchists against public figures and institutions representing the European Union. Police in Cagliari, the Sardinian capital, identified the arrested man as Luca Farris, a ferry operator, and said he was suspected of having sent a booby-trapped parcel last month to Mr Prodi’s home in the Italian university city of Bologna. The parcel was posted from Cagliari on January 9 and arrived at Mr Prodi’s home on January 12. It caused no damage or injuries. Full Story
