South Korean police on alert to protect parliament

Thousands of riot police sealed off South Korea’s parliament as legislators braced for a new vote on the delayed ratification of a free trade agreement with Chile. Witnesses said dozens of police buses were used as barricades at roads leading to the National Assembly. The operation involving about 9,000 riot police came after farmers vowed to hold a rally opposing South Korea’s first Free Trade Accord (FTA) with Chile. Chile’s Senate endorsed the pact last month, but its ratification here has already been delayed twice because of protests. Farmers claim the FTA will flood South Korea with cheap Chilean farm products. Full Story
