A British government translator accused of leaking secret intelligence information was on Wednesday cleared of any charges under the Official Secrets Act. Katharine Gun, 29, a former employee of Government Communications Headquarters, the global surveillance centre, claimed there had been a request from the US asking Britain to help spy on United Nations members in the run-up to the Iraq war. Prosecutors at London’s Old Bailey court dropped the case after they found no evidence against Ms Gun, but legal experts said the government was unwilling to see the legality of the Iraq war come under question in court.
