Yemen is seeking loans from Italy and Poland and warships from China to boost coastal security after al Qaeda-linked attacks on Western ships in its waters. Prime Minister Abdul-Qader Bagammal said in an interview on Sunday his impoverished country needed $700 million to patrol its 1,400-mile coastline, which touches the Arabian Sea, Red Sea and Indian Ocean. “We cannot handle this amount. Our domestic budget can only provide at most two percent of that figure,” he told Reuters. Suspected al Qaeda militants killed 17 U.S. servicemen in a suicide attack on the U.S. destroyer Cole in the port of Aden in 2000.
