Hours after Israeli missiles killed the spiritual leader of the militant group Hamas, Palestinians heralded him on Monday as a new unifying martyr at a mournful, vengeful and celebratory funeral that drew the largest crowds in Gaza in a decade. The Israeli government hailed the attack on the leader, Sheik Ahmed Yassin, as a blow to terrorism comparable to the American pursuit of Al Qaeda. Protests and violence flared in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel after the killing, by shrapnel-packed missiles fired into a Gaza lane as the sheik, a paraplegic, was pushed home in his wheelchair after dawn prayers.
