China assailed the federal government yesterday for Prime Minister Paul Martin’s decision to meet the Dalai Lama, saying the Tibetan monk is as great a threat to Chinese unity as Quebec nationalists are to Confederation. The Chinese embassy in Ottawa said Mr. Martin’s “drastic departure” from Canada’s current policy toward Tibet will only encourage “separatist activities” by the Dalai Lama. “We hope Canada, which has its own problem with Quebec, will understand our position,” the statement concluded.Full Story
