Chechen separatist rebels have killed at least eight Russian troops in a double ambush, security officials say. At least three local policemen were also reported killed in the incident – one of the heaviest blows to Moscow’s forces in recent months. A Russian interior ministry jeep hit a landmine and came under fire near the central town of Urus-Martan on Monday. An armoured personnel carrier which went to help them also hit a mine and was attacked, the local officials said. The pro-Moscow Chechen President, Akhmad Kadyrov, was killed in the capital Grozny on 9 May by a bomb blast claimed by a rebel warlord. Kadyrov was the Kremlin’s main ally in Chechnya and his death has threatened to further destabilise the devastated North Caucasus republic. Full Story
