British ambassador arrives in Baghdad, hopes to build fresh ties

The first British ambassador to Iraq in more than a decade, Edward Chaplin, arrived in Baghdad at the start of a mission to help rebuild ties between the two countries, an embassy spokeswoman said. Chaplin, an Arabic speaker, was due to present his credentials to President Ghazi al-Yawar and take part in a flag raising ceremony at Britain’s recently established embassy in the highly fortified Green Zone on Wednesday. “He got here this morning,” said Victoria Whitford, the embassy spokeswoman, referring to the top 53-year-old British diplomat, a Middle East expert.Full Story
