Bolivians protest against Brazilian oil giant

After walking 1,450 kilometers (900 miles) in 44 days, a group of Bolivian peasant farmers arrived here Tuesday to demand that higher taxes and concession fees be levied on an oil consortium led by Brazil’s state-owned oil firm Petrobras. The nearly 80 peasants who took part in the trek live in Chaco, the hydrocarbon-rich area along the border with Argentina. Some 500 protesters from the nearby city of El Alto joined the march into La Paz to back the demands against Petrobras, which operates San Alberto gas field in partnership with Spanish-owned Repsol YPF and the Franco-Belgian TotalFinaElf.
