A group of prosecutors investigating corruption in the previous Peruvian administration may be dismantled in the coming days, after having turned its sights on the current government, prosecutor Luis Vargas Valdivia told The New York Times. Vargas said the current administration’s attitude toward his group went from ambivalence to open hostility after prosecutors began looking into corruption charges leveled against President Alejandro Toledo, his wife, relatives and members of the ruling party. “The intention is not to renew our contracts while discrediting the unit,” Vargas said. “This is more than anything political because we have begun to cause discomfort for the government.” The New York Times said Toledo administration officials did not return phone calls seeking comment, but noted that the president had publicly questioned the unit’s performance in recent appearances.
