Oct 11 Nationwide Strike: NUPENG to Shut Down Oil Operations, Civil Society Groups Intensify Mobilisation

AHEAD of the October 11 deadline issued Federal Government by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and civil society organisations to revert to old prices of fuel or risk strike nationwide, the influential National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has ordered its members to withdraw their services and shut down all operations in the oil and gas industry by midnight on Sunday should the government fail to either revert to the old prices or engage organised labour and other stakeholders in a meaningful dialogue. Similarly, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has written to President Obasanjo, asking him to call a meeting of all stakeholders tomorrow to find a political solution to the fuel price hike and the looming national strike and mass protest that could heighten tension.
