Activists Storm Parliament in Rebel Georgia Region

Supporters of a candidate in a disputed election in the separatist Georgian region of Abkhazia stormed government buildings on Friday, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported. Thousands of people gathered in Abkhazia’s capital Sukhumi in support of presidential hopeful Sergei Bagapsh, broke through police lines and occupied the buildings before Bagapsh himself called on them to disperse and urged a peaceful solution to the crisis. “What’s going on can only be described as mass unrest,” Interfax quoted Abkhaz Prime Minister Nodar Khashba as saying. A sliver of territory on the Black Sea coast which broke away from Georgia in a 1992-3 war, Abkhazia is not recognized internationally but held a presidential election on Oct. 3 in defiance of Tbilisi.Full Story
