U.S. tourism rises as terror fears ease

At 19, tourist Nikki Martin is traveling for the first time from England to the glitz of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. She had postponed any transcontinental voyage until now because the Sept. 11 attacks felt too apocalyptic, she said.Her fear of terrorism hasn’t gone away, but in a major reversal since the attacks, she and other foreign visitors are coming to the United States in increasing numbers, according to U.S. government figures collected by the travel industry so far this year. If the trend continues, U.S. tourism industry officials predict that 2004 will halt a three-year decline in overseas visitors to America.
