While African governments maintain a grip over air space regulations, their national airlines are facing an oblique future because European airliners have taken over the lucrative routes they once dominated. Despite assertions by the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) that governments were breaching an international agreement by regulating the airspace and allowing the unfettered entry of foreign airlines into their respective countries, it is not evident that these would change their operational modes in favour of domestic airlines. According to AFRAA’s secretary general, Christian Folly-Akossi, under the Yamoussoukro agreement, African governments accepted in principle to deregulate national civil aviation authorities. Unfortunately, however, they have done little to stop western airlines from operating within their airspace. Full Story
