China to enact law against secession

China is to enact a law against secession, the legislative leadership announced Friday, in a move which analysts said is aimed at preventing rival Taiwan from formally declaring independence. The National People’s Congress Standing Committee said a draft anti-secession law would be considered at its upcoming meeting from December 25 to 29, Xinhua news agency reported. The report did not mention Taiwan and no details of what the law would stipulate were released by Xinhua. But Chinese political scientists said the legislation could make it illegal for Taiwan to declare independence and might create more leeway for Beijing to take the island by force. One proposed version of a draft law submitted to the legislature for debate gives Taiwan a deadline of December 31, 2020 to agree to reunification and give up any independence aspirations or face war, according to Phoenix TV’s website.
