The number of airline passengers patted down at security checkpoints should drop significantly by the end of the year, after the nation’s largest airports are equipped with new explosive detection devices, federal officials announced yesterday. The walk-through devices – known as puffer machines – can detect trace amounts of explosives, allowing Transportation Security Administration screeners to find nonmetallic bombs without physically inspecting passengers.
