Under heavy security, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Beirut Friday afternoon for a previously undisclosed visit designed to bolster anti-Syrian forces who have recently formed a new government in Lebanon. “This will be an opportunity to congratulate the Lebanese people on their incredible desire for democracy and the fact that they keep pressing forward and have now formed a new government,” Rice told reporters as she departed from Israel.
