Police occupied a seaside slum in violent Rio de Janeiro on Thursday after mounting a raid to stop gunfights between drug gangs near an area popular with tourists. Two suspected traffickers were killed in the Wednesday night raid on Vidigal in which gangsters fought back with grenades and rifle fire, a police spokeswoman said. Three men were arrested, two of whom were wounded in the clashes. “Police will remain in Vidigal for an indefinite period, making surprise operations to suppress illegal activities,” the spokeswoman said.Full Story
