Drug-trafficking Marxist rebels who for decades have waged war against a succession of Colombian administrations have vowed that if incumbent Alvaro Uribe is re-elected president next year, which polls indicate is likely, the Andean nation is in for at least four more years of “gunpowder and blood.” “It has become clear to us that no understanding will be possible with Uribe,” the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, said in a communique posted late. The statement was the first public reaction by leaders of the country’s biggest guerrilla group, with some 17,000 fighters, to the Oct. 19 decision by Colombia’s Constitutional Court upholding the 2004 amendment allowing Uribe to seek re-election next year.
