The government of Guatemala said Wednesday it was purging some 1,500 officers, including many precinct chiefs, from the National Police force for corruption. The deputy interior minister, Julio Godoy, told reporters that the officers who will be fired next month have been investigated by the National Police’s internal affairs office for using “improper methods.” “There are police officers who will be charged with robbing trucks, drug trafficking and extortion,” Godoy said, adding that 40 percent of those being fired were precinct chiefs and chiefs.
