First group of United Nations peacekeepers leave Burundi

A first group of United Nation peacekeepers from Mozambique has left Burundi as part of a phased withdrawal of troops that will end in December next year. Some 170 soldiers left Bujumbura airport at 10:45 am (0845 GMT) for Maputo in accordance with plans between the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) and the new Bujumbura government that came to power in August. “We have an agreement with the Burundi government, which calls for a progressive withdrawal of peacekeepers and we are now applying it,” ONUB military spokesman Momar Diagne told reporters Saturday.
