A U.S.-based dissident was put on trial in southern China Wednesday for “organizing and leading a terrorist group” and espionage, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Wang Bingzhang was suspected of committing crimes related to state secrets, the news agency said. The court did not deliver an immediate verdict after the trial which was closed to the public. The agency gave no details, but Wang had been expected to plead not guilty to what the Free China Movement, a coalition of more than 30 Chinese pro-democracy organizations worldwide and their supporters, called trumped-up charges.
