The U.S. Embassy worked to finalize plans Monday to begin evacuating thousands of Americans from Lebanon even as French and other European citizens continued fleeing the coutnry. It remained unclear exactly how the United States planned to evacuate those who wanted to leave. But the only possible options were to either fly them by helicopter to waiting ships, bring a ship into a Lebanese port despite the Israeli naval blockade of Lebanon, or take people by car or bus to Syria to the commercial airport there.
