Philippines Rules Out U.S. Combat Role After Blast

The Philippines on Wednesday ruled out U.S. troops going into combat against Muslim rebels as investigators questioned nine suspected militants after a bomb at a southern airport killed 21 people, including an American. The military laid the blame for Tuesday’s blast in Davao city on the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the largest of four Muslim groups waging a separatist war in the south of the mostly Roman Catholic country. The MILF denied any involvement in the worst terror attack in the Philippines in more than two years. A man identified by a television network as a leader of the Abu Sayyaf group — blacklisted by Washington as a terrorist organization with links to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network — said in a telephone interview his group carried out the bombing.
